Book Review: A.D Miller Snowdrops

Another Booker shortlisted book, though this one has had quite a lot of press- I've seen it on tube tunnels and billboards.

Snowdrops is set in Moscow amongst slush and state-corruption. The book is a letter of confession to Nick's fiance, revealing things he hasn't told her about his time working in Russia. All the way through he refers to this unknown woman in his present, and with the ultimate question, will she still want to marry him? I'm guessing no.

We have three plot lines; firstly that of Nick's relationship with beautiful young Russian Masha, then we have his law firm's business deal with 'The Cossack' (some of this was a bit over my head) and finally, his elderly neighbour's friend has mysteriously disappeared in the bitter winter. These threads do not intertwine, and simply seem parallel plots. I expected it all to come together at the end, but disappointing there was no pinnacle. They simply serve to show that all aspects of Nick's life, work, play and home, are all drenched in deception.

The first thread is probably the most interesting. That of Nick's 'relationship' with mini skirt wearing, sharp talking Masha who is very much his junior. Of course, we all smell at rat here, why is a beautiful young woman stepping out with a foreign 40yr old? Nick himself is also aware of an ulterior motive, he is no tragic hero, neither is he an old fool in love. He knows there is a price to pay and the narrative simple expresses his pathetic waiting for this scheme to reveal itself.

The journey to this 'revelation' is not mysterious. We can spot how Masha will sting him many pages prior to the back cover, yet it is written with beautiful extended metaphor and a masterful take-on hindsight. You are transported to Russia, with an authorial flair that could only come from personal experience (A.D Miller himself spent 3 years as a correspondent in Russia). The dialect is spot on, and an effective tool in creating the strong personas and presence of the characters.

The choice to write it as a letter was perplexing at first. Nick expresses intimates of his relationship with Masha that no fiance would want to hear. 'Stupid man!' I wanted to scream that the pages, 'why are you telling her this? Do you even want her to marry you?'. For that reason the ending did not have an impact. I feel as though the final line was supposed to be shocking, but anyone with half a brain could have guessed it.

An immersing read that transports you to another place and time. The plot could have been cleverer but nevertheless, it was something I looked forward to reading on my commute. I have a bone to pick with publishers, in that the text was almost embarrassingly large? Call me a snob, but that instantly changes my opinion of content. Also the stiff spine was a nightmare when trying to hang fast to a Piccadilly line tube pole. Is it correct to include physical aesthetics in a book review? In this case, it really did have a negative impact on my reading experience.

I'm a bit behind on the GlossyBoxes, and this review features the December box which has been seen on blogs far and wide already. For those of you who haven't heard of the concept, you pay £10 a month and GlossyBox will deliver a selection of beauty samples to your door to try.

In December, your ten pound note would have got you:

1. Blink + Go Eyeshadow and blush palette - forgot to open this for the picture, but it's a nice little compact with shimmering bronze shades that are perfectly usable

2. Cargo Cosmetics Classic Lip Gloss - Handy handbag sized tube but I got a hot coral shimmery shade that I probably won't use

3. Deborah Lippmann mini nail polish with Stripped to Go nail sachet - I love glitter varnish so this is a hit. I am also keen to try out the polish remover finger mitt, it is bound to beat homemade tin foil acetone pouches

4. Nip + Fab Spot Fix - I've fancied trying out this brand before, it's had a lot of press recently so is a good addition to the box. My skin is the opposite of acne at the mo (so so dry) so this won't be suitable for me, but I will keep it in case of future skin turmoil

5. Rituals Foaming Shower Gel - Hurrah, a full sized product, and a useful one too. Will look forward to using this

The verdict? This is a beautifully presented selection, and it is lovely to receive a box in the post, I was so eager to open mine that I tore the paper and almost ruined the above pics. Is it worth £10? I wouldn't feel shortchanged having paid £10 for this (I was sent the box to review) as it's a good selection of products and brands, yet it's quite hit and miss as to how much will actually be used. Individual tastes have a lot to answer for. I have a feeling that if I subscribed I might end up with cupboards full of sealed unsuitable products.

Review: SUPER skincare by Dr Perricone

I went to the launch of the new Super skincare range but somehow it slipped off my posting radar. Unfortunately my disorganisation means misplaced press releases, but I've been using them for quite sometime now, so feel qualified to write about them without using all the technical jargon.

This sleek packaged range is a spin-off from renowned Dr Perricone's main collection. It is based on the concept of 'Super Foods' and each product is packed with natural goodness with no nasty chemicals.

First, I tried the O-Mega Moisturiser £29.50. This smells delicious, like almonds and has a lightweight gel texture. It is moisturising and soothing without being sticky, and is absorbed in to the skin quickly without residue. It really does make my skin feel wonderful, but I have the driest face known to man (I'm talking eczema flakes at the forehead) so have had to alternate it with an industrial strength medical goop during this cold season. For normal skinned folk, this is probably a good level of moisture, and I look forward to spring when I can rely on it solely.

I also picked up the Night Recharge Serum £37. I've never used a skin serum before, but may be won over with this one. It's a creamy formula that smells like sherbet, that almost tingles and zings on contact with the skin. This sensation may be a placebo, but it convinced me that it was doing something impressive and is not heavy and pore clogging like others on the market. I believe my radiance has been boosted!

This range isn't cheap, but it isn't up there with the Kanebo's of this world either. The idea of natural skincare is very tempting, and best of all the range hasn't been tested on animals. The full collection contains products for every skincare whim, acne, anti-ageing, cleansers, SPF day cream...so if you have the funds it's a good one to give a try.

Competition Win!

I enter lots of competitions but, save for a packet of glow in the dark animal stickers, have never won anything. My luck is not the best, but my Pal Bianca on the other hand has the forces with her and recently won a Revlon competition. She very kindly invited me along with her to experience the 5* treatment.

The competition was in association with Britain’s Next Top Model, so the first stop of the day was breakfast at the Mayfair hotel with the winner of the show, Jade. Though dining with a model, it was not a modest affair, and B and I made the most of the buffet offering. We were then joined by a photographer, who we have to thank for all these professional shots.

Next stop was the spa at the Bagloni Hotel. We were instructed to undress and use the stream room, and we kept in the dark at which treatments awaited us. It was eventually revealed as a massage, and I must admit my heart dropped. I had never had one before for the simple reason I don’t consider a strangers hands touching my back relaxing. Quite the opposite! But I went along with it even so. I don’t doubt the skills of the therapist (apparently Beyonce had visited recently) but I’m not a massage convert and have come to the conclusion that tension suits me.

We then went for a shopping expedition at House of Fraser as B had also won a nice lot of vouchers to spend. Here we are, totally natural, admiring her potential purchase. She didn’t end up buying.

Then, ‘our driver’ took us back to the Bagloni for an Afternoon Tea. What a fantastic concept! I wish every day mid-noon I was presented with a three-tiered platter spilling with goods! The egg-mayo crustless sandwich was my favourite, along with warm jam smothered scones.

Jade then departed, leaving B and I in our swanky hotel room to prepare for evening. A make-up artist arrived to paint us pretty, and we changed in to evening attire. Our choice for the evening was prints.

We went for dinner at Aqua, a very ‘cosmopolitan’ (ie. expensive) Japanese restaurant on Argyll Street. I can’t remember what we ordered in total, again, we were not reserved. We did enjoy some refreshing pear cocktails which I would like to attempt to emulate at home at some point. Here is some vegetarian sushi I ordered. Unfortunately I had to send it back as it was laced with seaweed which I detest. I thought it impossible to get veggie sushi without seaweed, but the waitress assured me they just contained chopped pickles. I can tell the difference between a pickle and seaweed!!! Rant over.

We returned to the hotel, got bought a glass of champagne in the bar by a large generous man, and then retired to our room for a plush night’s sleep. Not before taking pictures of ourselves on self-timer of course.

Book Review: Daphne Du Maurier - Jamaica Inn

I treated myself to a Daphne Du Maurier after the complex Booker prize winner, and wow what a wonderful week of commutes I have had with Mary Yellen and co. So wonderful in fact, that I missed my tube stop and ended up in Manor House, this is only the 2nd book to ever do that, so of course my review will be favourable.

I do love Daphne Du Maurier, for me she embodies the perfect author with her combination of beautifully written prose and meticulously planned plots. I like books that make me think, but really I read for escape and entertainment so a good storyline is integral to my enjoyment. After reading Julian Barnes'- The Sense of an Ending with all its philosophical reflection, it was light relief to pick up something to which story is central.

Jamaica Inn is a lonely decaying public house on Bodmir Moor where coaches no longer stop. Following the death of her mother, Mary Yellan is sent to the inn to lodge with her Auntie and her husband, the cruel landlord Joss Melin. There are dark and evil happenings in residence, and Mary sets out to discover the secrets and bring the perpetrators to justice.

This is a mysterious novel that grips the reader with its intricately woven plot, but there are many undertones which make space for further thought. For example, there is much reference to Mary Yellan's position as one of the weaker sex. There are many paragraphs that start with 'If she were a man', 'If you were a man' , showing that the course of the book would be very different if she had been born male. Mary does defy female convention with her strong nerve and lack of fear, yet she is so self-conscious with the battles against femininity, that it almost has the opposite effect. She manages to physically and mentally challenge stereotype up to a point, yet ultimately her weak female heart returns her to womankind. Disappointing, but not a surprise.

Even so, I recommend this book to any reader who likes a little period drama. Writing in the early 1900s, this book has more bite than Victorian female novelists, yet keeps all the horses and traps, bonnets and candlelit rooms that I do so love. Top marks from me.

The best of the basics - concealer and eyeliner

I overspent this Christmas so there was little money for frivolity make-up wise, the only items I bought were repurchases to replace old mushy tubes. Not quite so exciting as rushing home a new product to try, but the above really are worth the cash and I couldn't face the day without them.

Firstly we have Estee Lauder Double Wear Concealer £19. This is my daily saviour. Everyday I wake up with deep purple half moons under my eyes and the first look in the mirror is never pleasing. This magic product turns a haggard face in to one that can pass as normal, which is no mean feat in my case. I've tried them all, Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, MAC, but this is the only under eye concealer that actually works for me. The coverage is generous, it dries matte and lasts, crease-free until home time.

The next must-have is Yves Saint Laurent L'Eyeliner Noir £22.50. I paint black winged flicks on to my eyelid each day (sometimes 2 times a day) and this is my liquid eyeliner of choice. I know it is an expensive option, but it is such an integral product to my routine I don't mind splashing out. When repurchasing I considered changing brand, but every other one I tried on my hand (Chanel, Bobbi Brown) just wasn't as good, wasn't as black or as fluid. This applies beautifully and stays perfect from 8am to 8pm. It is easy to remove too, which is essential for one with sensitive skin, I've previously had sore eyes from scrubbing MAC's industrial strength liquid liner off. My tube lasts me 3 months+ so price isn't bad considering.

Review: Julian Barnes - The Sense of an Ending (Man Booker prize winner 2012)

I don't know if book reviews have a place on this blog, but I read so many, and always have opinions bubbling after completion. This Christmas I received a bumper pack of cellophane wrapped books, collected together by their appearance on the Man Booker prize 2012 shortlist- I decided to read Julian Barnes' The Sense of an Ending first, which just so happens to have won the prize...

This book is about memory, and its unreliability. "what you end up remembering isn't always the same as what you have witnessed.", says our protagonist Tony Webster, whom takes us back to his school days with his four person posse, headed up by the incredibly clever Adrian.

The plot is simple and slow moving, Tony's first relationship ends with his ex Veronica taking up with Adrian. Tony gets married, has a child and leads an unremarkable quiet life. Though not dissatisfied with his lot, a surprise gift in Veronica's mother's will makes Tony, readdress the past, and confront his selective memory.

If I could sum up this book in one word it would be 'intelligent'. The slow moving story contains little action, and instead fills the pages with provoking philosophical prose. It is neither pretentious, or misplaced, yet I found myself getting irritated at the need to re-read paragraphs and ponder suggestions. At the end, I changed my tune and admired the cleverness of Barnes, but I couldn't help wishing that he had left some of the thinking to the reader, rather than spelling it out, albeit in a very eloquent fashion.

It's a short book, which took me about 3hrs to read. I do have a tendency to skip read and probably should have spent longer over it, but I love to flip the pages fast, seeking out the plot. The ending was the most thrilling part of the book, and I didn't manage to second guess dramatic finish either...all in all a good read, but one in which I couldn't connect fully with any of the characters, even Tony whose first person narrative we were forced to trust. I think the offshoots of philosophy are partly to blame for this separation, and in a way the story seemed better observed from the outside. I already knew that memory is unreliable. Now perhaps more so.

Violent Lips Blogger Shoot and Review

Everyone familiar with Violent Lips? It's a fairly newish brand that produces colourful patterned transfers for lips. I spotted them in a department store awhile back and picked them up with curiosity, so was delighted when I was invited to a Violent Lips bloggers photo shoot...delighted and terrified, as I am a camera shy blogger, ironically. As soon as a lens points in my direction my face contorts in self-awareness, which doesn't make for the most photogenic results. However, undeterred I headed off to the basement in central London to try on a pair of Violent Lips for size.

The lovely Chantelle (pictured with me above) did my makeup, extending my almost permanent eyeliner flicks in to perfect points and contouring cheekbones in to definition. She then selected me some 'Pink Giraffe' Violent Lips (1st pic). They are much like the temporary tattoos sported by cool 90s children, you press on and moisten with water soaked cotton wool, peel and then voila! The designs need to be trimmed to desired lip size before application, and I can imagine they might be a little fiddly to apply by yourself the first time. Handily, each pack contains two tattoos, so if you make a bad job of it there are spares!

I then was then photographed by Priya, who I commend for her patience! You can see the final image below, and I think it is testament to her great skill that I look comfortable and, dare I say it, normal, in this picture!

When first applied, the Violent Lips transfers feel very strange and tight, quite uncomfortable, however, Chantelle brushed some gloss over the top of mine, and it instantly eased the sensation. I'm not sure how long they would last, as I removed my giraffe print before venturing back outside (the design slid off easily with a slick of baby oil) but expect that they would see you through a night out.

They are a great idea for making a statement on a night out with minimal effort; you'd need little in the way of eye makeup as the transfers are so bold. Sadly, I don't think I will have occasion to use these again as my evenings consist of red wine pub conversations and theater trips; to turn up with pink giraffe lips might be frightening for acquaintances. How I wish these were around when Bianca and I were storming around East London with masks painted on our faces, wearing dresses made out of bin bags (true story). We often attempted lip art, but it descended down mojito straws and on to cheeks of strangers- Violent Lips would have been an essential purchase for our Sunday nights at the disco!

Deborah filmed a video of the bloggers shoot, so do watch as it shows the application of the transfers. What a great shot it has decided to stop upon- press my nose to play.

Review: Estée Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Mascara

Estée Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Mascara was an impulse purchase whilst in Boots Cardiff with my Gran. In need of a new mascara, decided to shun my favourite YSL false lash and instead headed for Estée Lauder as I know the company does not test on on animals.

I had no time for research so simply asked the girl for the best most extreme mascara- I find that they all claim to do different tasks, lengthening, volume etc. but I simply want the one that has the most transformative and dramatic impact. She gave me the above.

It has a massive brush, as you can see in the photo, and as with Dior Show, it is incredibly difficult to apply. Every day I have to mop up mess from the eyelid as it's impossible to be precise. The formula is not great either, the results are nothing special, and wearing this daylong I find it has a tendency to crumble, leaving me poking my eyes in pain.

And it was £22! I'm so disappointed, I've had Max Factor (review here) and Boots 17 mascaras that were half the price but ten times better. I will use this until it runs out, but will never repurchase. The search continues for a good mascara that hasn't been tested on animals! Any recommendations will be gratefully received.

The best pink lipsticks?

I am not a girly girl, but I have a fine collection of pink lipsticks! Come 7.45am on any given week day I can be found rummaging through my lip draw, frantically turning tubes on their end to try and find the perfect shade to supplement my eyeliner flicks.

Here is a line-up 6 of my favourites. The key to my choices is something chalky and pale, part 60s, part rigor mortis. You can see by the unattractive smushed stumps that they have all been well used.

I know that beauty bloggers favour a 'swatch' so here are some swatches along with a rundown of the shades. From left to right we have as follows:

The Night Out Pink
Barry M 100 - a bold statement with a thick opaque formula.

The Everyday Pink
YSL 10 - a rose scented nude

The 60s Style Pink
YSL 148 - very similar to the above, but slightly more peachy

The Pretty Pink
MAC Lustering- looks more natural that the swatch, a rosy flushed coral for enhancing natural lip colour

The Natural but Better Pink
MAC All the Way to Love - glossy sheer and moisturising with a hint of pastel

The Retro Pink
MAC Please Me - matte salmon, quite bright chalky. Lasts well but quite drying

In general, I advise to go for YSL lipsticks if you have the cash, they have a wide range of pinks in subtly fluctuating shades. Every formula is moisturising and has an enticing floral scent. MAC is great as a cheaper option, but avoid the matte if you have dry lips- it settles in the cracked and looks like weathered earth!

Review: Myleene Klass Nail Wraps

Last Saturday was a hungover sort of day, that comprised of little more than the Home and Away omnibus, a trip to Pound Land for Christmas tinsel and a hot chocolate at the fancy bakery- the perfect day therefore, to try out Klass Nails!

I decided to try out the gold glitter design, nice and festive for the coming season. In the pack you receive 34 wraps, along with a coarse nail file. Unlike other nail wraps, these don't require glue or heat to adhere, you simply match up your nail width and press down to stick. The end is folded over then filed off.

It is quite difficult to lay the sticker smooth with no air bubbles, and especially tricky to get the nail tip tidy. You can see below that I didn't manage to get them perfect, but I rushed through it and had applied the whole set in a nifty ten minutes. Despite them looking a bit shabby up close, the effect is quite good from a distance.

Unfortunately, they started coming off literally hours later. I survived them until the following morning, then picked them off on the tube as I travelled to the shops.

Kat tried the leopard design, and you can see they look rather good! Much easier than messing around with nail pens. Hers are still on 2 days later (maybe the glitter ones come off easier?) but she reported that the leopard spots faded after a having shower!

The verdict? These are a quick fix for night out party nails but are no substitute for a real manicure. You can currently buy a 5 packs of different designs for £19.99 on JML Direct, which isn't too bad- they'd make a good Secret Santa or stocking filler!

Phillip Kingsley Elasticizer

I haven't had my hair cut for about a year and it's looking ratty. Split ends are spraying from each tendril and it needs little encouragement to frizzy out sideways. I've been taming with the fantastic Philip Kingsley Elasticizer.

This pre-wash treatment must be applied to damp hair before washing as normal. The fact that the hair is cleansed afterward means that there is no residue masquerading as shine- it actually does work! I usually leave it on for half an hour under a stylish shower cap (provided in the box), but there are rumours that it can be left overnight for even more extreme results. Not sure how my pillows would feel about that but it is something I'd try for a special occasion, should one ever occur.

Recommended for adding shine and moisture and leaving hair super soft and smooth.

Christmas wish list- YSL Duo Terriblement Noir

Sorry for the absence, I've been lacking inspiration, and also light for photos! It's dark when I leave work so I need to remember to take all my pics at the weekend when I see the light of day!

The nights drawing in is drawing us ever closer to Christmas! With Christmas comes gifting, and every cosmetic company has long began churning out various sets with limited editions and special combos. My job has exposed me to more beauty gift sets than is healthy for a girl, yet nothing really caught my fancy until I saw this splendid YSL nail duo. I don't care about sparkles, or fancy packaging, please Santa deliver me these two dark bottle of lacquer...

Yes, they look the same, but dear friends, they are not, one is matte finish and one gloss! Worlds apart!! I am a big fan of black polish, so this little duo is a gothic dream come true. I love the manicure in the top picture, it's a clever way of showing how striking the contrast can be. I WANT

Vampire Halloween Makeup

I love Halloween, and it's the perfect excuse for a little makeup experimentation. I am not good at costumes, so I simply donned the black lace and set about researching some vampire makeup.

I saw an amazing tutorial from MissChievous with red glittered eyes and bloodied lips, so after eating cakes and watching Strictly/ XFactor I emptied my vanity draws to select the products. Luckily I have lots of colour, so improvised rather than buying heaps of new products.

The look starts with a matte white contoured face. The eye socket is blended with aubergine, before being darkened with black. Bright red eye shadow is added for a flash of colour to the lid and under eye, before glitter is brushed on to finish. A dark wine lip completes the vampire face. I remembered about my old Babyliss crimpers (or perhaps was reminded by Xfactor Janet..) and clamped a few sections of hair in them to add volume.

Aware of blogging duties I took a hasty pic before exiting to a house party. By this point I had drunk a fair few tumblers of poisonous punch, so the focus on the Olympus was not as sharp as it could have been. Perhaps my lack of steady hand makes it spookier?

I gave flatmate Kat matching makeup. We started the night with 99p glow in the dark fangs, but these made us look manic, and I can't share the photographic evidence. Next year I am investing in some professional vamp teeth!

Lily Vanilli- Best Red Velvet in London?

Yum, looking at these photos brings back delicious memories. One Sunday past, Emma and I took a trip to Columbia Road flower market, I lived in East London for 3 years and never bothered to go, but actually it is a lovely way to spend a Sunday.

It happened to be that freakishly hot October weekend and I was melting in a maxi, as we tried to complete our first task: find cake and coffee. Luckily we stumbled upon the Lily Vanilli bakery which more than satisfied our sugar cravings.

Emma and I are cake connoisseurs, from cupcakes to cheesecake, we have sampled some of the finest baked goods on offer, yet this particular red velvet cake was the best we have tasted! It used a sugar based icing rather than cream cheese, and was layered with freshly sliced strawberry for a sharp contrast. The secret however, lay in the discreet sprinkling of coconut in the center, divine!

After cake we browsed the flowers. These photos are deceiving, the market was packed with people and we did a slow shuffle past the blooms. I was too much of a miser to buy anything, but you are able to pick up a nice bunch for a fiver. Why not visit if you're in London?

Review: Fashionista Magnetism Nail Lacquer by The Saturdays

The magnetic nail polish trend has been around for a few months now, but it wasn't until a dreary Friday night in (I'm addicted to The Bachelor) that I tried it out properly. I used Fashionista Magnetism Nail Lacquer, which has been developed in association with The Saturdays. My colour is 'All Fired Up Red' and has Rochelle on the box, I think.

You are instructed to paint on a first coat, and then on application of the second you must hover a magnet over the wet nail. Unfortunately this is not very easy. The magnet has to be close to the nail to develop the pattern, yet too close and you end up blobbing the magnet on to the wet polish and making a mess. My left hand (pictured) was quite successful, the right hand not quite so...It is also a terrible chipper that barely lasts 2 days.

Even so, it has a novelty value and with practice and a strong top coat could be quite impressive. I'm going to bring mine to work for the girls to try out, will report back any further findings.

Astley Clarke Gemology Evening

Last week I was invited to a gemology evening with Astley Clarke. I arrived straight from work at the showroom and joined the other bloggers amongst the plush armchairs and glossy glass cabinets.

We were treated very kindly with flowing Moet and colourful sushi platters, but the best thing about the evening was that we were taught about gem stones by the experts. Gemologist Amanda Good talked us though a variety of stones, some well known (sapphire, ruby, amythest) and some less well known (tourmaline, spinel and citrine) as we viewed the beautiful jewellery up close.

It was amazing to learn that most stones come in many different colours (pink sapphire anyone?) and my favourite discovery of the evening was acrostic jewellery. Originating in Victorian times, these pieces conceal hidden messages, for example THIS Astley Clarke rin g is set with Diamond, Amethyst, Rhodolite, Labradorite, Iolite, Nephrite and Garnet which spells out 'darling'- such a lovely idea that I will remember about should I ever get married!

All in all it was a charming intimate evening which was not only great fun, but taught me a lot. Usually a battered silver locket strung around my neck is as fancy as it gets, but I am now lusting after chunky faceted rings set with twinkling diamonds. Hearing about how the gems are mined, cut and designed in to rings/bracelets really gave the pieces a history, and I would love to start my own fine jewellery collection very soon!

Indian Summer

Just as I was preparing to pull out the tights and pop on a hat, a heatwave has hit London. It's been pushing 29 degrees for the past two days, which is surreal for October. Yesterday we got an invite to a pool party on a boat at Battersea. I'm not good with the sun, so it was great to get a gusty Thames breeze.

Makeup was almost abandoned. I stick to my SPF essentials Nivea factor 50 and Mac Prep and Prime Face Protectant. I'm so sad to be back smoothering myself in sticky suncream, crossing my fingers for an Autumn chill to set in soon. I want to wear a coat!!

Review: TRESemme Split Remedy - Split End Shampoo

The new TRESemme claims that its Split Remedy range is 'proven to reduce split ends by up to 80% after just 3 uses'. They say that the Reconstructing Complex actually mends pesky split ends. Dubious but open minded (I have a LOT of split ends), I decided to give it a go. Here are my findings:

1st Wash
I washed my hair with the shampoo, and diligently followed with the conditioner and applied serum before drying. I still had lots of split ends but my hair seemed silkier and smoother, much less frizz than I usually have to cope with. Unfortunately, by the afternoon my hair felt lank and greasy.

2nd Wash
The same greasy feeling set in at midday, though on inspecting the ends of my hair, I felt that perhaps yes, the split ends had been reduced! Later on I peered at a different section of hair and realised they were still out in force...this is the problem, it's almost impossible to prove or dispprove the shampoos claims!

3rd Wash
By this point I abandoned the shampoo and just used the conditioner on my ends. At the event, the team pretty much admitted that the shampoo doesn't really have any impact, it is the other products that do the work. My hair is smoother, but I still have lots of split hairs spraying out in all directions. I see no evidence at all of any hair being mended.

Verdict
I think the claim that haircare can literally reconstruct hair that is physically split, is both bold and unreliable. The technology behind this is vague, they mention charged polymers act as magnets to reseal split ends...I'm no scientist but I can't see how this would permanently heal split hair. Perhaps others have had better results with this than me, but I think this product is a temporary solution to reduce the appearance of split ends, rather than actually mending them.

The collection works wonderfully to smooth hair, and my own locks do feel more healthy for it, but I think the only way that you will ever get rid of split ends, is to visit the salon for a trim.

Review: Smashbox High Definition Healthy Fx Foundation

I am constantly on the quest for the perfect foundation, and after good results with other Smash box products, I was keen to try its High Definition Healthy Fx Foundation...

Shade: I was sent 'Fair F0', the lightest shade in the collection. It looks a little orange in the tube, but blends in beautifully. It may be a little to dark for winter (I have a slight summer 'tan' at the moment) but it is perfect now. I advise choosing a shade lighter than you usually would with this foundation.

Formula: Oil free and SPF 15, it is really lightweight and moisturising without being greasy- perfect for my dry/combination skin. It's definitely best formula I've come across in a while, the perfect balance of hydration and shine-control with a radiant glowing finish.

Coverage: The coverage is described as light to medium by Smashbox, but in reality it is very light. It is supposedly buildable, but I choose to wear it sheer, which still produces a magical airbrush-esque finish. If you like a heavy coverage, this may not be for you, but then again, you might be surprised at how little you need - this is the lightest coverage foundation I have ever owned, but it's produced the best results. Skin actually looks like skin, but flawless.

Longevity: Lasts really well, I needed to power my nose (that is the shiniest part of my face!) but apart from that, I could get away with a whole day's wear.

Verdict: I LOVE THIS. Smashbox High Definition Healthy Fx Foundation really does make skin look healthy, it doesn't settle in to lines or pores, and manages to produce an almost matte glow. Coverage is light, but I simply use a little extra concealer to spot check problem areas on bad skin days. As aforementioned, Smashbox do not test on animals, so this is a guilt-free purchase. I will definitely be replacing it when I run out. Highly recommended!!

Also enjoying Mavala nail polish in 171 Blue Curacao- a bright turquoise, though for some reason blogger always changes the colour in my photos, the colour is more vibrant than it appears! Does anyone else have this problem? I'm considering using a photo hosting site.

Joe Essex once commented 'Look reem, smell reem, BE REEM', and now you actually can, with the release of the TOWIE fragrance and beauty collection!

Last week we descended upon a fancy Soho hotel to check out the Essex offerings. Fire burned in glass boxes, and Kirk, Sam and Jess took to the stage to answer questions about the fragrance. They didn't seem to know too much about it, but we learned that there are two perfumes on offer, one for women 'Dazzle' and one for men 'Be Reem'.

The fragrance is accompanied by a range of gift sets in glitzy packaging with the characters faces emblazoned on the front. It encompasses pretty much everything, including, eye palettes, eyelashes, nail wraps and lip glosses.

Review: Batiste Dry Shampoo Dark & Deep Brown

This is the lazy girl's savior.

I have an every other day policy for hair washing, but sometimes activities throw a spanner in the works; for example, what is the point of washing my hair in the morning, if I'm only going to sweat it out in spin class that night? Such days require Batiste Dry Shampoo, and a concealing top knot!

I've used the regular version of this before, and though effective, it leaves the brunettes amongst us looking decidedly white at the temples. Batiste now offer the product in a range of coloured formulas, and I was quick to purchase the Dark & Deep Brown to test.

I expected it to blast out a deep rich brown powder, in reality it is more like ashen grey and chalky. When rubbed in and brushed through it is more subtle than the Original versions in my brunette locks, but I was a little disappointed the colour wasn't stronger. It claims that it can disguise roots between colour treatments, but I'm not convinced.

Even so, I recommend on the grounds of:

1. It is cheap and effective at refreshing and banishing grease

2. It has a pleasant if somewhat potent scent (my flatmate actually asked me what perfume I was wearing).

3. I've Googled extensively, and it doesn't appear to be tested on animals

Review: Smashbox Limitless Lip Stain and Colour Seal Balm

RIP red lipstick. The kind deposit of the Smashbox Limitless Lip Stain and Colour Seal Balm in a PR goodie bag has revolutionised my lip colour, so much so that there are many tubes of sad scarlet lippie left languishing in my dressing table, unworn and unloved. I've moved on.

This product is great, ten times better than the Max Factor Lipfinity Lip Tint Pen, here is my (gushing) review:

Shade: I was given Sangria, a rich deep red with pink undertones

Application: As with other lip pens, this is quick and easy to apply; simply trace around the lip line and colour in. Simple and quick.

Colour: Lip stains can be translucent and patchy, but this is bold. The colour builds up to a strong vibrant red, just as striking as lipstick, and you wouldn't noticed any difference in pigment. It goes on evenly and even with my paper dry lips, it didn't settle in the lines (unlike others, mentioning no names)

Longevity: This is amazing. It really does last! I applied this at 8am and ate breakfast and drank multiple cups of tea without it budging. After lunch, the centre was slightly faded so I topped up (could have gone without though) and then I sailed through to evening without hitch, simply layering on the softening balm to keep moisturised. I even went straight out after work to a magic show and ate a bagel without reapplying. 1 reapplication for a 14hr day is impressive.

Verdict: I love this. There are always occasions that call for red lipstick, and it's a relief to have found a option that doesn't require mirror checks every 5 minutes for bleeding colour and scarlet teeth. Also, it seems to have left my lips in far better condition that lipstick. Even after a creamy Chanel rouge, my lips are dry and sore the next day, but thanks to the inclusion of the colour seal balm, I didn't have any problems here. Best of all, Smashbox do not test on animals! I sense that I may have found my new favourite brand.

Illamasqua - The Final Act of Self Expression

I was enthralled to learn that Illamasqua have teamed up with London funeral directors Leverton & Sons to provide a makeup service for the dead. With prices starting at £450, you can book a professional artist to fulfill your last beauty desires and make you casket-ready for mourners.

This all sounds quite chillingly macabre, but more and more these days people are planning their own funerals, so why not order your final face alongside the coffin? As an A-Level student I wrote myself a requiem in music class, embracing the literature-fuelled romanticism of death, and this service taps in to this idea; though I'm sure most folk wouldn't want to be an Egyptian queen like the lady in the pic above, the idea of an post-life enhancement will probably be popular with many. The Illamasqua artists have had full training to enable them to work with the deceased, which indicates the company are taking this seriously, not simply presenting a press-grabbing gimmick.

This post comes at a time of riots in London; we seem to have avoided trouble so far, but pubs are boarded and shops closed. I'm currently keeping watch from the kitchen window for any hoodies on the street below! I won't go in to a rant, but I find the whole situation shameful; London's own people destroying the city and claiming their thievery and thuggery is protest.

The Only Way is Purple Nails!

Like most of the nation, the clubbing cousins (my flatmates) and I were gripped by the antics in Essex; will Arg lose weight? Will Lauren marry love rat Mark? What will Joey Essex come out with next? It was when watching and pondering such questions that we noticed a beauty must-have.

It was a spring evening, and Lydia was sat in the garden with Debbie, blubbering over James, when we noticed that she was sporting the most excellent colour nail polish we had ever seen, a bright creamy lilac that surpassed anything in our current collection! The hunt began for this shade.

Finally, flatmate Kat came home triumphant, a lunchtime Boots dash had unearthed Rimmel Pro 312 Ultra Violet.

This is such a great shade for summer, bright but not blinding with pastel undertones. It has an extra wide brush which paints it on in one sleek brush stroke, and dries quickly too. It lasted really well on my nails, but at that point I still had the falsies which hold on to colour for longer anyway (so glad to see the back of those acrylic claws- but more on that another time).

There are other candy brights in the Rimmel Pro collection, and it seems like a good cheap polish option for those on a budget, though personally I won't be purchasing further shades due to Rimmel's company policies*

* Rimmel is quite ambiguous in their animal testing policies; Googling lead me to this Facebook response from the company. It seems like though they are conscientious, they cannot claim not to test on animals. They are not the worst out there, but I don't think this is good enough to convince me to buy their products.

Review: Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara

After my disappointment with Maybelline False Lash Mascara, I was keen to try the Max Factor version. I received Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara in a goody bag a month or so back, so have had a good length of time for testing.

Brush: Another rubber brush, medium sized with well spaced bristles. Lash separation is good, and the effect is certainly along the right lines of a false lash look.

Formula: The formula is a rich dark black that is not too wet. It dries to a long-lasting matte finish.

Effect: The finished result is quite impressive. My lashes were lengthened and appeared prominent above my eyeliner (no mean feat!). Without eyeliner, the effect is great and definitely mimics false lashes- perhaps a more natural day lash that full on party lashes but still, very good indeed.

Verdict: This is the best drug store mascara I have used for a long time, and it really does what it says on the tin. Unfortunately I will not be repurchasing due to Max Factor's company policies* so the search for false lashes in a tube continues!

Bic 'Just Live Your Summer' Party in Covent Garden

Last week I also went to the Bic 'Just Live Your Summer' Party in Covent Garden. It was probably the rainiest day of summer so far (that's saying something) and as we wobbled across the market cobbles to find the venue it was we got soaked to the skin!

Luckily inside the atmosphere was a little more temperate; we sipped some fruity cocktails and ate small tarts, sausages (for the meat eaters) and strawberries dipped in chocolate, delicious! There was a zumba class taking place, and though I have always wanted to try this, the combination of heels and alcohol made it a risky choice.

There were also Colour Me Beautiful consultations with Angi Jones. I remember my Mum and her friends going to get their 'colours done' when I was really young, so was eager to give it a go. Angi took me through a range of fabric swatches to see what colours suit my skin tone; the result was 'cool' colours. Very interesting, and may persuade me to step away from my beloved black in future.

Finally, there were Garra Rufa fish pedicures! This bemuses me, but I am a fish hater. I hate the look, taste and smell of fish. I even panicked in the controlled environment of Discovery Cove in Florida when I snorkelled and a fish swam towards me. So despite desperately needing some foot tending, there was no way I was going near those tanks; as you can see below, some braver souls did...

Anyone else tried the fish pedicures? Some people submerged their hands too!

Forever 21 Store London Launch

I've hear much about Forever 21 from American bloggers and well-traveled flatmates and so was pleased to learn it would be landing on Oxford Street in London this month. It sells lots of fashion, shoes and jewellery and seems reasonable; sort of like an American H&M?

I went along to the launch party last week which was held in the Old Sorting Office on New Oxford street. The roomy warehouse had been transformed to a Californian funfair, complete with carousel, burger van and roller skating babes!

We grabbed a cranberry based drink and contemplated getting a burger but alas, the queue was a mile long snake of hipsters, so we settled for an ice cream cone instead. Blogger Bip Ling was DJing enthusiastically to a hazy dance floor, and the one from Dirty Sexy Things was dancing in a cool way ha!

We were given a ticket on entry and shuffled in to see 'the show' at half 10. I expected some acrobats, but in fact it was the most amazing hologram experience. Truly amazing 3D technology made it look like the models were standing pouting before us, before shimmering in to animated splashes. We were transfixed!!

PS. Pictures stolen from Bianca at Fashion Slant- her iPhone is ten times better than my old Canon compact! When my Blackberry meets its demise I shall be converting to Apple!

A question of ethics - animal testing in cosmetics

I've been a little slow on the blogging front recently, and this is partly because I'm having a crisis of conscience. I've been reading up on animal testing in cosmetics, and it is truly shocking how many big brands still practice this, and even more distressing is the fact that I use many of these products every single day. Suddenly my scheduled posts for MaxFactor mascara, Olay skincare and Rimmel nail polish seem a little shameful?

I'm an great lover of animals and even wanted to be a vet until I realised that blood makes me faint. A few years ago I made the decision to become a vegetarian, not because I think eating meat is implicitly wrong, but rather it's something I don't feel comfortable with, and don't want to take part in. I'm no preacher on the topic of meat, but animal testing is in a league of its own; with the technology in this day and age, there is no excuse to practice such barbarism for cosmetic purposes.

So as a beauty blogger, a decision to stop using products tested on animals is a big change that will require much research and many limitations. Obviously, my dressing table is full of products from companies that test so it's going to take a little time to make a clean switch.

I have thought about this, and I think I firstly want to promote knowledge on which companies test and which do not (I was shocked to learn how many seemingly organic companies are on the testing list). I will continue posting about all products for awhile, but I will be discreetly labeling each review with information on the company's animal testing policies for those that are interested. The same goes for any products that are sent to me to from PR companies.

From this moment onwards, I will not be personally puchasing new products from any brand that tests on animals. I've got a feeling this might be tricky, but I am willing to put in the time to find great products that are animal friendly.

YSL Rouge Pur Couture in 10 Beige Tribute

YSL is one of my favourite cosmetic brands across all categories, foundations, eyeliners, and mascaras are all note worthy, but the lipsticks are exceptional! Rich creamy formulas that leave lips hydrated and drenched in colour for hours, I urge everyone to splurge on your favourite shade.

I love a nude, pale pink, so I make sure that I always have a YSL tube about my person. Rouge Pur Couture in 10 Beige Tribute is perfect, and can be worn lightly for a natural lip, or built up to a 60's chalky pout. I've been wearing it all week, only exchanging it when red wine stains required a darker shade of Chanel!

Absolution Organic Skincare

I like the idea of organic produce, but I must admit it is not a lifestyle I have fully submitted to; £1 for lettuce or £2 for organic lettuce? I will always be reaching for the former in Tesco, simply due to financial constraints.

But perhaps skincare is just as important in the organic debate, after all we are putting these formulas on out faces twice a day, 365 days a year (give or take those makeup caked drunken snoozes). I sometimes read the boxes of face cream in Boots, but I have no idea what any of the scientific ingredients actually are or do.

I have seen some organic 'beauty' in Wholefoods, overpriced, ugly and unpleasant smelling, so I was really surprised to learn that the sleek and beautifully packaged Absolution products are organic. The brand has won some prizes for the design, furthermore it is crafted recycled materials printed with vegetable ink- stylish with a conscience

Looks aside, this stuff is good. I was given two products to try:

1. L'Eau Soir et Martin This cleansing water smells deliciously herbal, and can be used with a cotton wool pad to remove makeup and cleanse skin morning and evening. My skin is really sensitive, and prone to dryness, yet this left it clear and clean but not tight. It even melted off heavy duty three coated mascara without irritation! A pure luxury to use, I began to look forward to taking my makeup off at the end of the night and have already gone through a bottle. I am definitely going to repurchase.

2. Le Soin Regard - This is an eye cream that claims immediate effects and long-term benefits. I'm not sure about how will it smooths wrinkles overtime, but it certainly brightens up the eye by day. I have really bad dark circles at the moment (concealer reviews ahead!) and this really reduced the appearance with its reflective light reflecting formula. It also has an amazing fragrance that smells like it is doing good things!

I find it so hard to source skincare that agrees with my combination face, but these two products have proved an excellent match, and organic to boot! I would love to have the whole collection on my bathroom shelf and might have to purchase over time- would like to see how the moisturisers work.

Braun Sound of Fashion Party @ The Hospital Club with Daisy Lowe

Last week I was invited to the Braun Sound of Fashion event at The Hospital Club in Covent Garden. A night of fashion and music was promised, with Daisy Lowe at the helm as curator and DJ.

I came straight from work and had do a speed clothes change in the Oasis fitting room which was totally clocked by the sales assistant! Awkward! We arrived at the venue to find a very pink room, and supped very good champagne whilst chatting to the lovely PR girls.

The show was the highlight of the evening; it featured long-legged (Braun epilated) lovelies wearing outfits picked by Daisy who is currently starring in the Dual Epilator campaign. Lots of monochrome with slicked back ponytails and scarlet lips with a booming beat-ful soundtrack. Topped up glasses accompanied a cheerful pop set before we clattered in to the night for a woozy tube journey home. Great event!

False Nails: What are Powder Gel Extensions?!!

I've never in my life had false nails, so when the urge came a few weeks ago, I was naive in my choices. I rushed from work and managed to get a walk in appointment at Perfection in Crouch End; as I looked at the 'menu' I was flustered from my haste and quickly sized up the options, it seemed I could opt for 'Gel Extensions' or 'Acrylic Extensions'. I know that gel is far better for nail health so I quickly stated my choice and was ushered over to a chair.

The lady instantly launched in to a spiel telling me that gel only works without extensions, if I wanted tips I would have to use 'powder gel'. I was confused but she assured me that this product was from OPI and very good. She worked quickly, mixing a powder with liquid to create a paste, and I was pleased with the result.

However, the next day I began to ponder the authenticity of 'gel powder'. Gel nails typically have a liquid formula and are dried using UV light. It just didn't add up! I performed a Google search which quickly told me that there is no such thing as 'gel powder', according to various forums, if any form of powder is used, then it is acrylic based.

I felt put out, especially as the salon charged more for 'powder gel' than acrylic, so I fished out their loyalty card and called them. I managed to speak the the girl who did my nails. It seems that the formula they used is indeed acrylic based, she explained that in the US they call it 'powder gel' but here in the UK it is known as 'clear acrylic'. Fair enough, but as we are in London, that is surely a little misleading?!

Well, I got to the bottom of it in the end. I think next time I'll upgrade salon and go for Bio Sculpture. Has anyone else had 'powder gel' nails? Would also love to hear from anyone that has tried Bio Sculpture.

Mavala New Season Colours

Mavala is another polish brand of choice in our household. We already have a selection of brights, so I was excited to be given the new season shades which are a beautiful contrast. These new five colours juxtapose sweet candy pinks, against cool greys before the final intersection of a pearly midnight black.

I always find Mavala a delight to use; I usually paint my nails in the evening, and have trouble with seemingly dry nails emerging in morning light with hash grooves from my cotton bed sheets. Mavala however, is very fast drying, and is rock hard after an hour leaving a smooth glossy finish.

My current favourite is Black Oyster which is a worthy rival of Chanel's Black Pearl! Definitely worth checking out the collection. You can buy online here

Review: Maybelline Falsies Mascara

I am trying to cut back on cosmetic spending, and so headed to the local 'drugstore' for a new tube of mascara. Maybelline seems to have a good rep for mascara so I choose its newest, Falsies.

Brush: You can see from the image that the brush is a rubber, curved impalement. The crescent shape is a good idea, but I'm not convinced that it caught anymore lashes that a straight brush. Lash separation is good, and does indeed nod towards the 'false lash effect', but it is not as prominent as higher end brand YSL False Lash.

Effect:The overall finish is not particularly lengthening, volumising or curling.The look is very straight, separated and stiff, and when wearing with a slick of black liquid liner (as I almost always am), my lashes are barely visible!

Formula: A good black formula that is a good consistency and dries matte. I did notice that there was a tendency for a blob to form on the tip of each lash. You can see this in the pic below.

Verdict: Disappointed. I fear that I have been spoilt for too long with designer mascaras. This is better than having bare lashes but is not terribly enhancing. I will bear it for day, but for evening I need something a little more dramatic. If you want a true false lash effect, definitely opt for the YSL version, it's worth the cash!

My Perfect Foundation Quest

I am on the quest for the perfect foundation. Is it possible to get the flawless airbrushed look of ads, or is that simply a myth? I want my next foundation investment to be the closest thing possible to skin perfection and my criteria is specific.

I have crazy combo skin (oil and dry patches reside together) and I'm looking for a medium finish. It must look natural but have good coverage. It must have a matte finish but also be moisturising. I want a identical colour match, and it must last ALL day.

Wish me luck. I mainly be testing with samples, where this isn't possible I'll try and get a layer applied at the counter. First to be tested is Laura Mercier Moisturizing Foundation...

Review: Philip Kingsley Body Building Volumising Shampoo

I've never been much of a fancy shampoo girl, mainly due to restrictive funds I am more often found at Boots exploiting their 2 for 3 offer on Herbal Essences or Aussie. Also, I was of the option that pricier hair products perhaps aren't that much better than the average...I say 'was of the opinion' as I was kindly given the new Philip Kingsley Body Building Shampoo and Conditioner to try.

It is designed for fine, limp or flyaway hair and mine is all of the above, so I was very curious to see if this renowned brand could do what it said on the tin. The short answer is YES! As I dried my hair it looked thicker around my shoulders. The texture was heavier, and it almost felt like each strand had been coated (I imagine this gives the volume boosting illusion). In addition to my sudden increase of hair, I found that it looked really glossy. I was truly amazed that a shampoo and conditioner has achieved great feats that no other styling product or volumising device has ever managed!

Five shampoos later and the effect is just the same. It costs £14.30 per bottle, but it works serious magic is definitely worth the cash. I will be re-purchasing when my supplies run dry.

Review: New Season Chanel Nail Polish Mimosa

Yellow nail polish is usually a little too bright for my tastes, but when my bessie Ellie BBM'd me with details of her new season Chanel purchase, I jealously begged her to bring the bottle along to our Friday night wine session.

Chanel Mimosa is a bright, canary yellow polish with a subtle and fine golden shimmer (which you can see in the picture above). The colour is beautiful in the bottle, but it doesn't translate quite as well to the nail; as with other Chanel polishes, the glitter and sparkle seems to disappear on the nail, making a seemingly superior shade very similar to other cheaper yellows.

In addition, the formula is an absolute nightmare to apply. You need to apply at least 4 very thin coats to get a strong colour. If there is too much polish on the brush, it simply doesn't dry. I have ended up with bumpy smudged nails to show for my impatience! From experience, yellow polishes are traditionally streaky on application, but it is a little insulting to have such trouble when paying £17.50 a bottle.

For all its faults, I am very much enjoying having bright lemon nails. It is the perfect complement to this season's colour blocking trend, and just begs to be worn with neon lips! A definite beauty must-try, but I recommend choosing a cheaper brand to get your yellow fix.

Wish List: Shu Uemura UV Underbase Mousse

My dressing table is longing for Shu Uemura UV Underbase Mousse. This lightweight formula claims to even out skin tone, reduce redness and minimise the appearance of pores, as well as offering SPF30 sun protection. As soon as the sun starts winking, I make sure to apply SPF face cream, but so often the thick formulas of high SPF's leaves me looking even pastier that life (and believe me, I don't need help to look ghostly!). This lightweight mousse has a slight colour tint which would help a healthy glow, I'd probably wear it alone on park bound weekends.

This limited edition version comes in a beautiful bottle designed by Japanese artist Mika Ninagawa...I hope to get one before summer ends!

The Barry M Rainbow

My flatmates and I have pooled our nail polishes so we now have quite a collection that covers most colours. Our prevailing brand of choice is undoubtedly Barry M. I've dabbled in the Chanels, Essies, OPIs of the lacquer world, but always end up returning to this drugstore champion. The shades are beautiful, the formula stays chip-free for days, and most importantly they are really pocket friendly at £2.99. Next on my list is the '3 in 1 Nail Paint' that acts as a basecoat, top coat and nail hardener.

Does anyone have any other nail polish brand recommendations?

Review: Braun Silk-épil 7 Dual Epilator

The hair-removal gods must be shining on me, as I am lucky enough to have received a second epilator to review, this time the Braun Silk-épil 7 Dual Epilator. The campaign is fronted by the beautiful Daisy Lowe, who will cause any girl to turn green-eyed with serious leg-envy.

Spec: The new Braun epilator is the world's first to combine epilating and shaving. The special head has a 40 tweezer epilator with an integrated Venus blade to remove stubborn hair and exfoliate skin (reducing ingrown hairs). It can be used wet and dry.

Comfort: I have to be honest here, I have been using the Remington epilator (review here) for about a month now, so I am used to the process, but when I lowered this new Braun to my leg I exhaled a surprised 'ouch'. This is a stingy machine that is nowhere near as gentle as the Remington. I accepted the sensation fairly quickly but even so, the backs of knees and sensitive ankles are quite painful to epilate.

Efficiency: This is where the Braun comes in to it's own. By combining the razor with the epilator, it is quick and easy to remove hair from your legs. You are recommended to use it with shaving foam, and it is truly satisfying to see a channel of smooth leg emerging with one sweep of the machine. The whole process took me about 5-10 minutes, half the time of the Remington.

My initial worry was that shaved hair obviously grows back quicker and thicker than plucked, so though making the instant results quicker, will regrowth be closer to a razor result? 5 days later though the skin is not completely smooth, regrowth is still not visible- I'm happy.

Extras: The product comes in a zip pouch, and has an additional head for for epilating without shaving- useful if you have time on your hands and would like a longer lasting result.

Overall: Testing this product has shown me that epilators vary greatly model to model. This Braun is a great innovation; the wet and dry compatibility means it can be used in the bath or shower, which is a nice time saver for hurried pamper session.

The addition of the razor adds a new dimension to the traditional epilator. The result is instant and visible- no more going over and over the same patch of leg to achieve a smooth result. The results are perhaps not quite as long lasting, but still beat the humble razor in longevity.

The pain may be an issue for new epilator users, but for the practiced plucker it's nothing outrageous. I think that this is probably best suited to those who already epilate and are looking for a versatile upgrade.

Wish List: Yves Saint Laurent Voulpte Sheer Candy Liptstick

The lightweight lipstick is enjoying a revival, with Chanel, Lancome and Dior all releasing sheer shades for spring. The latest to join this list is YSL with their deliciously named Voulpte Sheer Candy collection.

I really really want one of these. Encased in YSL's elaborate signature tube, they are surely one of the prettiest packaged lipsticks on the market? I went to lustily swatch the shades on my hand, and the sales assistant told me that the formula is somewhere in between lipbalm and lipstick, highly moisturising but with great staying power.

If that wasn't enough to convince me, the shades each have delightful fruity names such as 'Succulent Pomegranate' and 'Dewy Papaya', and each lipstick is scented to match! I will be purchasing 'Luscious Cherry' as soon as I have the funds.

Review: Illamasqua Powder Foundation

I absolutely love Illamasqua, and when I walked in to its Beak Street store I knew I would not escape without making a purchase. Dark and glossy, the shop is both glamorous and gothic, a combination that further emphasises the boldly coloured products. The only purchase I could justify was a foundation, so I abandoned the notion of repurchasing my favourite YSL Teint Resist and browsed the Illamasqua offering which included a light foundation, cream foundation and powder foundation. I decided to go for the powder as I cannot abide a shiny finish, matte all the way. The verdict? I am pleased and disappointed with the product in equal measures.

Positives: The shade is perfect for my skin, (also the first time ever I am not the palest colour in the collection) and the coverage is brilliant. Applied with the leather-backed sponge provided, it sweeps over the skin, effortlessly covering blemishes and uneven skin tone to leave a velvety shine-free finish. It can also be applied with a brush for a lighter coverage- handy for the summer months ahead.

Negatives: My make-up has to last from 8am- 8pm, a feat which my beloved YSL Teint Resistant manages without problem. This product on the other hand, lasts for far less time. I think that its staying power is very much dependent on the condition of your skin. Any dry patches are highlighted as flaky circles, and any oily patches become mottled. I was also surprised to find that it does not deal with touch ups. When applying more product, the result is really uneven and the powder is so stubborn it will not blend at all. I think that the product adheres differently to clean skin and already powdered skin; therefore if you have a make-up melt down, it is impossible to get an even result unless you totally remove and reapply. ALSO, there isn't SPF protection which really I would expect for £21. I suppose this truly is night makeup, best applied in evening under dark skies. I will be saving this for evenings that require little longevity but great coverage.

Review: Remington AMAZE Airstyler AS1201

With hair that is both flat as pancake and resilient to volume shampoos, I have lately restored to back combing with Elnett and a hastily applied top knot to get me through the day. Enter the Remington Amaze Airstyler AS1201...

I was kindly sent this product, and it arrived in a compact case with 5 different styling attachments. I went for the one that promised maximum volume, the 3rd from the right in the above picture. The machine has 2 different speeds and I automatically opted for the hottest to test its skills.

The concept of this is brilliant. I have never been able to recreate a blow dry at home, as there are not enough hands to section, dry and brush hair at the same time; by combining the hairdryer and the round brush into one product, it is possible to at least attempt a volume boosting dry.

Spritzed on some Bumble&Bumble Volumising Blow Dry Spray and started tentatively; with memories of getting round brushes stuck in my hair (and subsequently cut-out) on a school swimming trip I have never fully trusted round brushes. Perhaps my caution affected the efficiency? I had to go over my whole head twice, and only when I started tugging hair and rolling the brush from the roots did my hair start to volumise.

The finish was not exactly the same as a professional blow dry, as I started with dry hair, the smoothing and straightening process was missed out leaving it rougher than a professional would. Even so, the result is quite impressive when you consider how lank and straight my hair usually falls. The picture below (sorry for lack of make-up!) demonstrates a good volume boost that I can never achieve with a hairdryer alone. I think that as my technique with the product improves I will start to see professional results.

'Get Set for Summer' with Venus

We have finally transitioned to Spring in London! The air smells different and days have lost their crisp coat-requiring edge- I even found myself with a brie baguette in Hyde Park for a work luncheon one day last week!

However, the clammy air has reminded me of the essential physical transformations induced by summer, from swapping boots for sandals to switching the make-up routine, this warmer requires far more body awareness than winter.

I will be undertaking the Venus 'Get Set for Summer' challenge, blowing away the winter dust to hopefully reveal a glowing goddess! Well, at least be able to bare my legs in the park this summer would be a great help. I was very kindly sent the above: Satin Care shave gel, Venus Embrace razor, Venus bikini trimmer, Paul & Joe blot paper, MaxFactor Sheer Gloss Balm and some oversized ASOS sunnies, all in a woven beach bag. I adore Venus products, after years of a pound a pack multi-coloured plastic razors from Boots, it was a most pleasant change to try the smooth shaving, non-nicking Venus razor. Shave gel is not totally necessary, but very much a luxury- legs are left deeply moisturised with a healthy sheen.

A 60s Face for Spring

The 60s is probably my favourite beauty era with it's dark flicked eyes, powder pale lips and spiky lashes. My everyday makeup look isn't too different to the above, but I added a few extremities to step out into the London night.

Face
Perhaps go a shade lighter than usual if your foundation library allows you the liberty? I used my usual colour but made sure to pat the skin with power to get a fully Matte finish.

I actually also applied a very light peach blusher (can't really detect in the above image) to give my chubby cheeks a little definition.

Eyes
I used YSL liquid liner. Start half way down the eyelid and paint slowly along the lash line before letting the brush flick out at the corner. Once you have the basic line you can build up it to achieve a bolder look.

Lashes were generally extreme in the 60s, long, thick and fluttery. I didn't have the time or patience to fiddle around with falsies, so instead dug out my old YSL false lash mascara. This is one of my favourite products, so this particular tube on its last legs. In fact a slightly dried up gloopy mascara is perfect for achieving a clumped lash, so don't throw yours away if they are less than 4 months old! I layered it on the top lashes and then dragged the brush left to right on my bottom lid to define and group the lashes.

Lip
I have a wide selection of nude lippies, but went with Rimmel 001 Nude Attitude. Top tip is to rub foundation over your lips before applying to intensify the colour and staying power.

Voila

Ready for the pub! Sadly 2 red wines later the nude lip was not looking quite so good- makes me wonder if I should make drink choices based on lipstick colour?

Review: MAC Wonder Woman Penultimate Eye Liner felt tip

Hurrah! I received this primary coloured package from my sis for my birthday. My one and only piece from the Mac Wonder Woman collection, and well chosen too, as dark eyeliner flicks are my signature make-up look. So how does it compare to my usual YSL liquid liner?

Shade: This only comes in one shade, black. The shade is perhaps not as dark as a liquid liner, I needed to go over the line twice to get it jet black.

Initial Impressions: Like my Max Factor lip pen, it looks exactly like a felt tip! No scent but super packaging, both box and product.

Application: I usually go for a streamlined liquid flick, and on seeing the chunkiness of the pen nib I instantly predicted thick, inaccurate application. This was not the case. The pen has been cut with a slim, precise point, meaning the line you draw onto the lid is very directional. It can be built into a chunky bold line, or alternatively tamed in to a gentle curve (see picture below). Easy to hold, the pen is much more manageable that other liquid eyeliners, and the user has better control over the result. A good one for beginners.

My one problem with the pen is that you don't get the natural tapered swish of liquid liner, you literally must draw sketch the flick yourself. Saying that, the look was still fairly simple to achieve with a steady hand.

Longevity: Whilst the eyeliner was still present at the end of the day, it was somewhat duller and would have required the refresh of a second coat had I been venturing out after work.

Verdict: A lovely alternative to liquid liner that I will use on lazy days , or to maximise and revamp my liner before evenings out. Precise and easy to use, this product will create bold liner looks with less fuss and mess than liquids or crayons; a great one for eyeliner novices.

Review: Remington Smooth&Silky 3in1 Epilator EP6030

I was delighted to be sent the bestselling Remington Smooth and Silky EP6030 to try. I have never ever used an epilator before, so therefore have no solid comparison for this product. This review will best serve as an honest guide for my comrades, nervy first time users who are scared of pain, yet longing for a smooth leg!

Spec: This model boasts 42 tweezers (impressive) and 2 speeds for epilation. This was very handy when tentatively veering towards the leg for the first time, the slow setting is far less aggressive sounding- also a handy function for more sensitive areas. The machine can be used with a cord or cordless, which would be really handy for travel.

Comfort: I would skip straight to this on reading an epilator review...I'm not sure how painful other models are to use, but I can vouch that this Remington one is not at all distressing. I feel faint after a blood test but had no trouble rolling it up and down my legs. The 'moisturising rollers' on the head must indeed be effective method of soothing freshly epilated skin.

Of course, it is impossible to pluck a hair without some sort of sensation, but I would call it a 'pinch' rather than pain. Granted, the knees are tricky more customers, and actually the armpits are seriously ouch, but I think this stems from the fact that it is awkward to stretch the skin, and epilate in the direction of the hair.

Efficiency: The shape of the tweeze head is curved and perfect for leg epilation, it allows you to follow the shape of the calf and thigh beautifully. I had envisaged clearing hair from strip of leg in one swell sweep, but in reality had to go over an area a few times before the hair was removed thoroughly- this was not too much of a problem with time on my hands and minimal pain, I'm not sure but perhaps it is usual to have to scour the skin multiple times for a smooth result?

Extras: The model comes presented in a handy zip pouch, along with a stylish purple exfoliating glove and a cleaning brush. There are also interchangeable heads, a foil shaver and a smaller precision epilator- useful but I probably won't use these often.

Overall: Cheaper and more convenient that waxing, epilating is a revelation to me! Results lasted well over a week, and the hair has grown back much finer so it is hardly noticeable. You do need to plan your hair removal quite strategically as the process leaves you will a plucked chicken look leg which is not palatable for the outside world, but this is one of the only drawbacks.

As for armpits, I don't think any epilator is going near then again. That was pain. I couldn't access the area properly and left myself with some bleeding pores (this review is getting more grotesque by the second). A shame for summer, but not the end of the world.

As far as epilators go, this is a safe investment that is gentle enough for the inexperienced leg. Highly recommended.

Valentine's Lip

Red lips are a cosmetic safety net. Any time you want to add glamour, drama or interest to an outfit, a slick of rouge is a safe bet for making the right sort of statement. However, a seasonal dry lip has prevented me from being as liberal as I would like with lipstick- for a matte product, lips need to be in optimum condition. Therefore I decided to experiment with a two-tone look. I like the creepiness of a darker outline which melts into a pinkish center.

I took the above pic with a flash so the colours are not represented as accurately as I hoped. I started with a red Barry M lip liner to define and sharpen my cupids bow, before washing Duwop's Twilight Lip Venom (I know but it's good!) over the entire lip. I finished by painting a darker smudgy Chanel red around the lip line, and blended with a brush.

Wearing: Mac Rani Pink Eyeshadow

I already own a bright fuchsia Mac eyeshadow, but as an avid avoider of shimmer I was interested to see how a pearlescent pink powder would fare.

I decided to take it easy and slowly build up colour around the eye line using a fluffy slanted brush. Focusing on the outer corners I tried to define and shade and blended out towards my eye socket. This proved a favourable alternative to painting on the powder thickly; frugality may well be the key with pink eyeshadow, too much and it you can end up looking like you are losing a battle with a nasty eye infection!

All in all, I think a hint of shimmer makes bright eye colours far more workable for the average Joe. Heavily pigmented block shades require a lot of blending, and whilst they can look amazing in a dark, beat- saturated club, the look is perhaps a little too much for something meager like going for dinner. Yes, I've made my peace with the shimmering shadow.

Review Max Factor Lipfinity Lip Tint Pen

I received this product in an event goodie bag, and tried it with relish the very next day. The child in me in intrigued by these felt pen- style lip products, and I have wanted to try them out for awhile.

Shade: 08 Nice n Nude, a new colour that comes in an orangey brown casing

Initial impressions: The product looks exactly like a felt tip pen! Has a fruity pleasant scent

Application: Very easy. The lip pen acts as both a liner and colour, allowing you to accurately trace the outline of your lips before colouring in. A speedy and precise alternative to the laborious lip brush.

Colour: This is really a lip stain, so the colour is a vibrant but translucent. Though labeled as a nude, on me it built up into a unmistakable red, granted with brown undertones but red all the same. Less of a commitment than lipstick, it looks just as striking and I got several 'looks' whilst doing a mid-Saturday Tesco shop; the colour is too bright to be passed off as natural.

Longevity: Branded as 'lipfinity' is a little rich. It does have good staying power but is in no means infallible. The product does not absorb into the lips as Max Factor state, it resides on the surface with a slightly sticky feel. After drinking a glass of wine I was left with a 80s style strong lip line and little else!

Verdict: This is a decent alternative lip option for daywear but by no means discreet. It definitely requires topping up after eating and drinking so remember to pop it in your handbag. Perhaps avoid this product if you suffer from dry lips, I overheard a makeup artist comment that when applied to dry lips it 'sticks in the cracks like dried blood'! Not an attractive look!

Hypnotic Fragrance

You can only wear one fragrance at a time, which poses a problem for a perfume hoarder like myself. I love buying or receiving new scent, and as a result I own a dressing table full of alchemist like bottles. I usually go through phrases of different day perfumes, and my flavour of the month is Dior's Hypnotic Poison.

Perhaps the first to channel the enchanted apple-esque bottle (Nina Ricci and DKNY have followed) this perfume looks as good as it smells. Opening the amethyst jewelled lid reveals a scent that is both candy sweet and sophisticated and musky. It reminds me a bit of those cupcake dolls you could get in the 90s...they had a cake shaped casing that could be flipped into a skirt and were 'scented'.

I sometimes write about perfume in work, and I find it quite fascinating how a smell can be broken down into a list of ingredients. So my cupcake doll scent is in fact:

Top notes: bitter almond and carvi
Heart notes: Sambac jasmine and jacarandra
Base notes: vanilla and musk

I can definitely get the vanilla but my nose is not delicate enough to detect jacaandra (a tropical flower apparently). Does your favourite perfume contain anything suprising?

Laura Palmer and Lipstick

I must be a true blogger, when unpacking 23 years worth of belongings in my new dwelling, I couldn't resist trying on my blonde wig...and taking photos of it. I wore this long fringed wig for a Twin Peaks party, Laura Palmer in a black jumpsuit with red lips. I have never bleached my hair, and the sight of light locks upon my head was a shock. It made my skin take on a pinker hue, and my eyes looked positively black.

Changing your hair colour gives you different freedom with make-up, and I have always envied blondes as they can do brights and neons effortlessly. Whether vivid pink or deep wine hues, the look is ten times as striking.

I now live on a road of hair in North London. We have Wig World, Wig Land...lots of wig and extension destinations. I am keen to expand my wig collection and would love rows of mannequin heads with delightful dos to choose from. Next on my list is probably a firey ginger.

Paul and Joe Lipstick

Being presented with a pretty paper paisley lipstick tube on Christmas morning is delightful enough, but winding it up and finding a lipstick carved cat at peeping out was a joy indeed! The only problem is that I don't want to use it! How can I smudge this feline to mush in the name of vanity? I was thinking that a delicate lip brush would be the most humane way to use this product. Any suggestions?

HQ Hair and Nars Bloggers Event

Blogging has be stunted due to moving house and losing internet access, so this post is a little behind the times. A week or so ago I braved the cold of London to pop along to the HQ Hair and Nars bloggers event, just off Regent Street.

We were given to opportunity to have our makeup done by Nars artist David, and this I seized, asking him if he could create an interesting day look. I wear makeup everyday, it is requisite for work and has now leaked into my weekends. I almost always apply something to my face before leaving the house, if not for vanity, then simply for enjoyment of the ritual. I have a table with draws full of products, yet it is the same basic components that I use every day. A swipe of foundation, bolded eyebrows, cover under eye bags (important), a slick of eyeliner and coat of mascara. Blush and lipstick optional. This I can do in my sleep, the entire routine takes little more than 5 minutes with my practiced hand. I asked David to give me an alternative that would be subtle enough for the office.

Removing my day-old eyeliner, he began with a sweep of golden creamy eyeshadow, upon which he built a myriad of dark shimmering browns and metallic greens. Black was avoided completely, leaving definition of the eye to a smoky purple which was patted around the eye line with a hard brush. Black mascara completed the look.

The result was surprisingly enhancing, and I especially loved the contouring and blending which always makes a professionally made-up face differ from that designed by an amateur. David confessed that blending is indeed the key, and suggested when you think you have blended your eye colour enough, continue for another five minutes! It will take me a little practice, but this is a look that could rival the vintage eyeliner flick.

A Christmas Gem

All the fashion houses are churning out their gifty beauty stocking fillers at the moment. I have several such pieces from previous years, every single one beautifully packaged in richly decorated cases. However, they largely remain unused due to the colour palettes being not quite right, too gaudy and bright, too glittery or simply unpractical for everyday wear.

This is where this striking Lip Jewel compact from D&G differs. Crafted to look like a glossy oversized ruby it will delight every dressing table, yet it opens to reveal four wearable shades of the brand's cream lipsticks. I have never tried D&G products, but I want to, and I love the fact that each shade is quite distinct, as opposed to several variations of shimmering rouge.

It's £40, and such a typical 'gift' that it would feel wrong to buy it for myself. Perhaps so large hints will have to be dropped around my beloveds.

Chanel- Paradoxal Nail Polish

Chanel Paradoxal. The new purple must-have that was apparently everywhere at fashion weeks worldwide. A non-attendee of fashion week for the past few seasons I am obviously missing the greatness of this shade.

Above you can see a bottle shot and the polish inside appears to glimmer and glitter in the light. In a brightly lit department store it shone with all it's tempting mystical purpleness and I was taken. Paradoxal was purchased.

Unfortunately it seems that this polish is Paradoxal by name and by nature. Once applied to the nails the bright highlights completely disappear and it dries a dull murky grey/purple. I don't really understand the technology behind this, even under direct light only a hint of shimmer can be detected. The picture below is quite accurate in it's depiction of the shade- a metallic nondescript mauve. I don't mind a dark grungy painted finger, I often welcome it! However, paying £16 for a sparkling bottle I did not expect such a paradox.

In typical Chanel fashion, its longevity is very questionable! Morning-after manicure I was chipping. Chanel shades always bewitch me but I need to learn my lesson, save the pennies and step away from the counter next time.

Ren ClearCalm 3

Posting has been delayed by a frantic flat hunt, the London property market is not fruitful for letting at the moment and it has been an emotional and unproductive journey so far. At this rate we are going to end up living in the house with no oven and a washing machine in the garden (true story)!

Anyway, last week I went to Ren event where a new skin care range was revealed. Ren ClearCalm 3 has been specially formulated for blemishes and breakouts. Presented in a fresh green colour scheme the products claim to deep cleanse and purify without harshness. The range is pictured above, unfortunately by Blackberry.

This line is said to be extremely effective treatment for problem skin, and the Anti-Blemish Treatment Mask contains ingredients which are medically prescribed for acne in the US- an indication that this really will work.

I am admittedly a 'drug-store' skincare girl. In the past I have tried fancy Dr. this or thats, Cliniques etc. only to find that they make my skin worse! However, Ren is the one higher end brand that I have found to be compatible with my sensitive skin. It smells divine, contains natural products and actually improves the condition. My face is currently dry and chapped from the icy winds of recent, but this range will be a godsend for those with sensitive problem skin, in this case it may just be worth paying that little bit more for something that will make a real difference.

Raining Skulls

My penchant for Alexander McQueen accessories has accelerated. Daily musings upon the how greatly a silk skull scarf would enhance my life have been stifled with the discovery of this beyond amazing umbrella. When I saw a colleague stride in with this grand piece in all its glory and I stopped in my tracks; a ghostly glittering skull perched on top of a slim elegant umbrella...could there be anything that I want more?

It should be carried like a walking stick, tapped along the pavement to the beat of beautiful shoes. A macabre trident that Dorian Grey or Hamlet may have brandished in the heat of a rage! If this were mine I would celebrate dark skies that I once sighed at, I would be checking BBC weather and be hoping and praying for a downpour!

The Smock Debate

I love this dress from TBA. Lavish folds of sumptuous velvet in rich emerald, all complemented by a Victoriana crisp starched collar. Heavenly! This dress is so particularly suited to my tastes that one might question why I have not already purchased it, indeed I even own boots like above and could style it harmoniously!

The reason? This is a smock. Whilst the generous hanging fabric would conceal all manner of snack induced lumps and bumps, the sad fact is that too much fabric adds pounds. The lack of definition, lack of structure on this model above, only highlights her matchstick arms and legs; it is ironic- the fabric drapes off her bones leading us to deduce that her ribs are showing underneath. With a more robust thigh however, the loose cut would pose several questions, is it hiding a pregnancy and where on earth do those hips stop?!

I love this dress but I am wary. I am wary yet I can't resist. At least ASOS have free returns.

Summer/Autumn- Crossover footwear

19 degrees or 26 degrees, the temperature varies daily and small variations of paper require polar opposite wardrobes. To coat or not to coat, to tight or not to tight, it is necessary to check BBC weather before dressing in the morning to avoid ending up umbrella-less in a monsoon or wrapped in woolens during a heatwave.

At least footwear is a little more versatile. Ellie bought some beautiful Opening Ceremony wedges that look great with bare legs but will also shine with thick knitted tights. A season-less investment. Tan optional.

A 'Natural Look "

After congratulating myself on my particularly 'natural' makeup the other day, and duly taking a photo to demonstrate my look, I realised that I was a victim of a classic girls' misconception. Many moons ago I read a wise book (Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging) and can remember the main character (Georgina) writing in her diary that she was creating a natural look to meet her crush (Robbie). She then reels off a list of about 15 products that it took to create this bare faced look. I laughed at this when I read it but I confess I am no better.

To create my 'natural look' I used the following:

1. Bobby Brown tinted moisturiser in Albaster
2. Dior Show mascara
3. Dior skin flash under-eye pen
4. Laura Mercier blush in wild Bouquet
5. MAC lipstick in Creme D'Nude

All those products to create a fresh, inconspicuous facade! My idea of natural makeup is clearly not so natural at all. I should be contemplating a product strike and boldly stepping out with nothing but a smear of Olay upon the cheek, yet when I look at the above picture I can't help wishing that I had thought to use my Benefit Brow Zing- my eyebrows would take a more natural hue with a little powdered colour.

I want a Castle

I want a castle, or to be more precise, a chateau. After returning from Normandy I am quite adamant that the French life is for me. Coca Lite, bargain brie, cool clouded skies, rich expresso, hyper super super markets, history within stones, red wine, horse heads over a fence, strong hayfever remedies, ghostly sunny beaches, a jammy crepe, cider with real apples, a ricola sweet, time to turn pages...

I got back to London and opened a freshly graffitied door. Silver scrawl. Not remotely inspired.

But a BT Home Hub is comforting. Normal posting will resume after the sparodic service of recent.

Neon

This is annoying, blogger has altered the colours of the above photo- this pink is actually eye-wateringly neon, so bright in fact, that when I first applied it, I was shocked and hastily removed it before it dried! This Essie colour is amazing on toes, and will add a little spark to any sandal. It has been on my feet summer-long.

Accessorising ...

Everyone loves a new accessory. My camera is now the proud owner of a personal flash, a splendid top hat if ever there were one. I love this camera but have often been exasperated at the lack of flash, a feeling magnified tenfold realising that now (4 months later) there is a new model, at the same price, with a neat built-in flash. Oh well, I managed to find the Pen flash which has been specially designed for this camera and is reasonably compact. It is annoying to cart around a separate flash in a pouch but it gives a distinctly retro look to the camera which I like. Prepare for party pics in darkly lit places!

Lip Service for Nails

Whilst browsing the KG site for sandals, I was accosted with a pop-up add for their new sunglasses collection. The glasses actually look amazing, but it was the styling of the images that caught my eye. I adore the lip/nail colour combination used. The above features a molten high shine metal gold nail- a trend I spotted in the new SATC film on Samantha (probably the only admirable thing to appear on screen during the entire movie).

White lips! The next stage up from the nuder-than-nude foundation lip I am such a fan of! Where can I get white lipstick? It looks fantastic with this blue on the nails- OPI have a shade very similar to this.

Matching nails to lips has never looked so glamorous. Glossy on both finger and mouth, this shade is really pretty for summer. The glasses are also pretty darn cool!

A Particuliere Colour

If you'd told me a year ago that I would be painting my nails brown, I would have thought you were off your rocker, but this Chanel shade has become a firm favourite. 505 'Particuliere' was released awhile back and promptly sold out, so I was delighted to see it back on the counter last week and snapped it up immediately! It is a creamier beige than it looks in the photo (no natural light or flash) and has a smooth, fawny finish. Divine.

Apologies for the lack of recent posting, I've had a busy couple of weeks but will try to resume the regularity!

Summer at (a) Shoreditch House

The tube has regained its festering stench of human sweat, red sunburnt shoulder straps accessorize every girl's attire, beers are acceptable at mid-day, and nights extend with no coats required. Summer has hit London, by all account for 3 days only, but that is sufficient time for all of the above.

Londoners go crazy for outside space, to place their bodies into the direction of sunlight; parks, gardens, balconies, roof terraces...we will queue for these things and sit sandwiched like sardines, still believing that our spirits are extra high because we're outside and its summer! Becky, Katherine and I balanced ourselves on our 'balconette' for a bottle of wine and a vodka spritzer. Perhaps a little less glam that the barbecued lobsters of Boundary and the swimming pool of Shoreditch House...perhaps a little more chance of falling off a roof, but equally as pleasant for an evening.

Blueberry Fairy Cakes

Yum! I made some blueberry fairy cakes the other day. I am a self-confessed terribly cook who has been known to poison the breathe unsuspecting flatmates with potent garlic rich humous, however I am a confident baker!

I used a traditional fairy cake recipe, googled from here, and spiced it up with fresh blueberries at the base and a blueberry blitzed icing topping. I am a bit of a cake connoisseur, and was thinking of starting a regular cupcake feature, in which I try and test the bakeries of London. Would this be of interest to anyone?

Christelle's New Do

On Saturday I met Christelle and did I double take when I saw her new hair style! She had text me when she had it cut but wow, I was amazed when I saw the above! Bluntly cut, the fringe circumnavigates the face, highlighting her bone structure. It is so contemporary that I felt like a dowdy aged one standing next to her with my long naturally boring brown hair. My first exclamation is that it reminds me exactly of the YSL A/W 08 styling (see picture below), a look I fell in love with but was destined to remain unacquainted with due to a round moon face with chubby cheeks.

After exclaiming my adoration for the style for several minutes, we went for a splendid mezze in a darkened tea room and enjoyed the most delicious halloumi.

Nail Girls Islington

Regular readers will have noticed that I have become something of a nail nut. Without a slick of polish on my hands I literally feel naked, ashamed and disgusted at the very sight of my own bare nails. I have a bag full of various colours and brands, and now have a new favourite to help me get my nail fix.

I was invited to the Nail Girls salon in Islington to view the new spring/summer '10 collection; the four colours above are striking in the glassy bottled flesh, and quite unlike anything I have seen within other nail brands. The salon was set up by two sisters, and excitingly they devlop the colours and formulas of the polishes themselves.

Talking to Lynda-Lousie, I was a frenzy of naily questions, and was very interested to learn that she bases the colours each season on the catwalk collections rather than observing other cosmetics brands. This way the shades are new, unique and desirable every single season. Browsing the shelves of the salon I was really impressed with the range of colours accumulated...from the palest of pink nudes, to flouro pinks, vibrant blues and shimmering metallics, every base is covered. There is even a matte collection for those who desire edgy frosted nails. The real test however, is the polish staying power. The proof of the pudding really is in the chipping. I was treated to a manicure during which I choose matte black polish. 4 days later? Perfect. Totally perfect. This is very unusual with black polish, and I am mightily impressed. I think it actually steals the non-chipping crown from OPI, and price per bottle it is less for a higher volume!

Protect the Face- Mac Prep + Prime

The sun is out in London! This year even I have caught the city's park bug and have pilgrimaged to the grass a few times already. Last year I totally avoided the sun and stayed as pale snow summer long; this was not so much a fashion statement but rather a submission to the fact that I tan unevenly- lily legs combined with golden arms is never pleasant. However, this year I plan to embrace the sunlight armed with some hefty sun protection. Finding high factor protection for the body is easy enough, but trying to get skin-friendly SPF for the face is always more of a challenge. The best I have found is above, Mac Prep and Prime Face Protector.

It is lovely high factor 50+ and is marketed as a primer, giving it a dual use. Smoothed on after moisturiser it evens out the skin texture before foundation application, and is easily absorbed and non-greasy. I highly recommend going to beauty counters rather than the chemist for face sun protection as the formulas are designed especially to treat your skin delicately- take heed, I tried a Loreal facial suncream and suffered a undignified allergic reaction! It is worth paying a little more to be kind to your face.

Molton Brown London Wilde Fairyfleur

Molton Brown lovers like myself will be excited to know that a new collection, mystically named Wilde Fairyfleur, has just launched. Inspired by English folklore and the country's springtime in bloom, the products carry notes of citrus, rose and amber, enriched with a posy of fairyfleur, commonly known as cowslip and cornflower.

Molton Brown products are always richly fragrance and luxurious to use, so I was eager to try the new scent; something that is inspired by magic and smells like a blooming hedgerow is instantly appealing! Though my nose is not delicate enough to detect any of the distinct fragrances listed in the press release (quoted above) I can confirm that the overall scent is delicious. It is not a heady pungent floral, but rather light, fresh and reviving. It has an instantly appealing and non-offensive perfume, that would make a safe gift; I spent a good 30 mins in Molton Brown sniffing bottle tops to find my Gran a Christmas present, and just wish this collection had been available then! Sadly it's limited edition, so I think an additional candle and body lotion will have to be factored into this months pay packet!

Nails and Lips

Silly pose but I always enjoy creating colour combos between nails and lips. Here I have Orly Lollipop on the nails with Twilight Lip Venom. I reviewed the venom awhile back, so was faintly amused to overhear a toilet conversation about it, around a mirror in a club last Thursday eve:

Girl 1: 'What's that you're using?'
Girl 2: (embarrassed) 'It's actually Twilight Lip Venom'
Girl 1: 'Oh. But it looks so good!'
Girl 2:: 'I know it is really good!'
Girl 3: 'I've used that, it's good!'

I didn't have time to put my oar in but all 3 are right. It's very very good!

Stealing from Grandma

The last week or so we have seen a ray of sunshine in London. Being sun deprived folk, this small change has lead to a flurry of sloppily applied fan tan legs emerging with dusty gladiators sitting triumphantly on the end of each; we even saw a girl in a cotton playsuit and Raybans pounding the pavement at midnight! The trouble is that it is still actually April, and we still live in the UK. Whilst we have a hint of yellow light by day, the wind is still chilly and temperatures drop at night: enter the spring jacket.

Shorter and lighter than its winter counterpart, the Spring jacket allows us to feel that we are sartorially morphing in to summer, whilst also ensuring that we don't catch hypothermia. My jacket of choice is the little Aquascutum number above, just the ticket for a slight rise in temperature. I 'acquired' this delightful piece from my gran; it was a familiar sight on her back for many years in that time drew many a compliment from myself. She eventually, very kindly, offered it to me, and so a coat used to fields and country paths was thrust in to the cities streets and underground. Some may not agree, but I feel that it perfectly transcends from a Gran's wardrobe in to a Granddaughter's, and knowing its history makes it even more enjoyable to wear.

ASOS Access All Areas

I love ASOS. Absolutely love ASOS! It is an e-commerce inspiration that seems to get it right season by nailing every trend going, but doing it on a budget that is accessible for everyone. I was very kindly invited to a preview of the new collection, and am pleased to report that this season is no exception..

We are going to get bunny ear head bands, ethereal pastels, flowing maxis, bold prints, deliciously touchable textures with a healthy dose of heeled clogs, peep-toe sneaker boots and African-inspired jewellery. Catwalk on to the internet and finally on to our backs! Ingenious.

ASOS events are famously fun with dress up sessions and pampering to the max. Champagne in hand and a good few canapes later, the wonderful PR girls encourage you to try the clothes and get snap happy on that catwalk. Sadly it was to be a flying vist and I didn't have time to try anything, but there was so many covetable pieces on those rails! I had a hard time picking though the photographs to choose my favourite items but I think that the below 3 are definate summer staples. There was also a pretty cotton sun dress I was taken with but did not have the image for!

Revealing but not so much, this swimsuit would be a chic alternative to a bikini that would definitely turn heads on the sand!

Orly Sweet Collection

Pastel polishes are everywhere are the moment; OPI, Essie, YSL, Chanel and Illamasqua are just a few of the brands I have seen stocked with candy coloured bottles. I Love a good pastel nail, so was delighted to be sent 3 Orly nail polishes to try. The new season collection is aptly named 'Sweet' and the shades are named after sugary delights. Above I am wearing Lollipop (lilac), Gumdrop (green) and Lemonade (yellow), how delightful!
Colour
The polishes are highly pigmented which is a big plus, I hate wishy washy colours that take multiple coats to resemble the colour they are in the bottle. Here I have 3 coats on but I am admittedly paint happy- 2 would have been sufficient.

Application
Smooth and streak free! I also noticed that they dried very quickly, I estimate within a minute and a half?

Longevity
The multi-coloured hand was simply for blogging purposes! I have now applied a coat of Gumdrop on to both hands and will update on how many days I stay chip free. So far I am impressed with the range, but the proof of the pudding is in the chipping! TBC...

UPDATE: 3 days perfect and took much Cutex/scrubbing to get off! Very strongly bonded to the nail

Mmmmm Mulberry

Most of my interaction will Mulberry is lusting over the brightly coloured leather goods, stroking buckle straps and checking for interior pockets (I visit Mulberry's bag concession almost weekly). However, on a stroll through Knightsbridge on a rainy day I was introduced to the new season collection, and I want it.

Prints are everywhere at the moment, with the new take on animal print seeing actual printed animals as opposed the print of the animal's coat. As a horse lover and ex-member of 'Pony Club', I was particularly taken with this delightful carousel horse print dress...the creepy magic of the vintage fairground is really spectacular! There is no way that I could afford this little horsey number, but they also have a silk scarf in the same print, which is more palatable for the bank balance. Forgoing a dress for a much smaller scarf seems like a sensible trade, I might even consider myself thrifty?

Din Sko!

Swedish blogs have cruelly introduced me to the wonders of Din Sko, a shoe shop filled with seas of black booted goodness, wedges, laces and heels in abundance. But do they deliver abroad? Do they heck!I was left plotting a shoe excursion to Stockholm, and wondering how many shoes it would take to breach a baggage limit. Luckily, kind work colleague took my shoe plight in to consideration as she ventured to Scandinavian lands, and I am now the proud owner of these wonderful wedges! Canvas for summer with some super silver hardware, they are a dream for my feet! I wore them from 8am to 11.30pm successfully, with bowling/walking home in between and managed to reserve complaints of pain for the very end of the evening, rare indeed! The only problem is that they have done little to ease my Din Sko lust, and rather have fuelled it as I know I need more pairs. How much was that plane ticket to Sweden?

Giles Deacon for New Look Tenth Collection

After the excitement of the Giles Deacon show in Paris (I think I need one of those furry face bags) we still have his New Look collection to look forward to later this month. I can hardly believe that he is on his 10th collection, how time flies! Here is a 'sneak peek' of the new collection.

Prints will be huge this spring and the bright graphic design of this dress would look great with stomping wedge heels and red lipstick.
This cute top manages to nail two trends in one and combines nautical stripes with delicate floral print. I can't wait to see the full collection!

Aussie Angels Photo Shoot

Here is the result of the Aussie Angels photo shoot. Held in Islington it was a fun day of pink champagne, cupcakes and pampering. We were instructed to bring some spring/summer pastels and denim to create the looks for the shoot, this was quite difficult as my wardrobe is quite famously loaded with black drapey apparel. Luckily I remembered this white French Connection smock which is summery enough, though no one will pries me from my black tights at this season of the year! This stylist was brilliant and directed Tor, Yishyene, Christina and I for the picture above, for me this meant actually grabbing hands and demonstrating foot positioning as I am awkward whenever I have to look directly in to a camera.

We each did a series of individual shots and got involved with the quirky props box that the Emma and Lisa from Aussie had brought along. I decided on the giant paper mache bee which the photographer strung from a broom to make it look 'realistic'! It was quite hard to interact with the bee but I don't regret making his acquaintance. I really liked how my hair was styled here, the stylist actually managed to get some volume into my limp locks using old fashioned hot rollers- a future investment perhaps?

Thanks to the team for an amazingly fun and indulgent day!

Alice in Wonderland

Now that Alice in Wonderland is in the cinemas I feel it is fair to write a little opinion-based review on it. I was lucky enough to see freshly release a week or two back, along with the new Tim Binns jewellery collection for Disney Couture. There had been so much hype over this film, and I felt that the darkness of Tim Burton combined with the already dark tale surely could not fail; as the press shot leaked they seemed to confirm that it would be an excellent film I would enjoy, but this was not the case.

The story was disappointing. I was naively expecting a Disney-esque tale but Burton transforms the strange wanderings of the mind into a directional and Hollywoodized tale of slaying dragons. I have not read the books so I cannot comment on whether or not this is more faithful to the text than Disney, but to name it Alice in Wonderland is misleading as it is surely closer to the 2nd novel, Alice Through the Looking Glass?

Then Johnny Depp. He ruins the Mad Hatter in the same way that he ruined Willy Wonka; by over-emphasising a sensitive nature the characters lose their fictional qualities and become too human. Why isn't the Mad Hatter simply mad? Why must he be self-consciously so and need reassurance that it's ok to be 'different'.

The effects were nothing to speak off. The only thing I've seen in 3D was 'Terminator 3D' in Florida 6 years ago, yet I remember that was scarily dimensional with killer wasps buzzing around your head and bullets aiming at your face. I think that the 3D element wasn't fully exploited here; though many scenes were undoubtedly beautiful no one was blinding reaching out at the screen, it wasn't spectacular.

Even so the costumes were stunning, the characters were aesthetically brilliant and the casting of Alice was spot on. I am very glad I saw it, but will avoid doing so again and intend to stick to good old Disney. The Disney Couture jewellery however, was quite amazing. As disappointing as the film was, I am loving the merchandise that is popping up everywhere, and even the beauty brands are jumping on the bandwagon! I think I'm actually going to get these OPI polishes below- pure glitter goodness!

And this Paul and Joe kit is absolutely adorable. The pretty tin contains blotting paper and a lipbalm- the classic illustrations make the perfect dressing table cosmetics.

Wah Nails Dalson

I finally got my nails done in Wah Nails! The lovely Ellie got me a gift voucher for my birthday and I couldn't wait to bling up the talons. On arrival I was presented with a massive book with nail designs and it was quite a task to choose between the colourful, glittering designs. I eventually settled on the above which is a little out of charter for me (not a hearts and kisses sort of girl) but there was no point sticking to the usually classic monotones when such a wealth of prettiness is on offer. Wonderful Meghan set about filing and painting before eventually doing the intricate art work with needle sharp nail polish pens. I think the result is quite splendid, especially as my nails are little stubs of things! I spent the rest of the evening unashamedly admiring my own hands and holding glasses in such ways that others might admire them too!

Wah Nails now have a concession in Topshop Oxford Circus, so awe inspiring nails are accessible for all! I recommend that everyone try it out, it is quite amazing how much better you feel about everything when your nails look good, but beware, I think it is addictive! I want to go again already.

I'm not a fan of posting picture of my face. I always feel vain and pathetic snapping away holding a camera at arms length and reviewing each photo to see if I look normal enough, yet this is the best way of demonstrating a point often enough. That is my disclaimer.

Awhile back I bought a lilac lipstick, Barry M 'Lavender 129' and renewed my love of pastels on lips. Chalky coloured lipsticks are great for a subtle splash of colour, I wear it with a flicked black eyeliner and pale face. Above I put it straight on to my lips so the natural redness tones it down somewhat, but for a bolder look paint it on to foundation primed lips. Barry M has some great shades and I recommend everyone should try a pastel for spring!

Had a busy week and would dearly love to stamp through some sea in wellies. There should be some interesting posts this week, including a photo shoot with Aussie and a review of the new Alice in Wonderland film- I saw a preview on Friday and have been expressing my opinion to everyone ever since! It will be therapeutic to extract my view coherently.

ASOS Barbie Lounge

The Barbies have landed at ASOS... The Barbie Lounge opened it's doors this week, offering a selection of very well dressed dolls, as well as some pink bags and accessories, all finished with Barbie's signature.

As a child I was far more in to My Little Ponies than Barbies, but these polished ladies above are quite different from the bedraggled, leotard wearing dolls that I remember. Perhaps 22 is the perfect age to get your first Barbie?

Tote-ally YSL

As a person who can often be found riffling through the collective post at the bottom of the stairs, it was beyond exciting to find an absolutely massive YSL envelope propped up on the metal post stand. The Spring/Summer 2010 Yves Saint Laurent Manifesto is the 6th edition of the iconic publication, and arrived as usual in a cotton tote.

The tote is hugely oversized, so much so that it perhaps would cause a stir if actually used to transport goods. Designed by Stefano Pilati, it features a hazy strawberry design and is finished with a YSL logo scrawl.

The strawberry theme is continued in to the collection, with sweet fruit prints adorning dresses (see below). Classic tailoring continues in to Spring with added ruffles and bold colours. Modeled by Natalia Vodianova, the styling is enhanced with bright lips, scarlet nails and a deep Mediterranean tan.

The images are undoubtedly beautiful, and I can't wait to imitate the beauty looks for a summer occasion. Whilst the fashion remains unobtainable for the moment, the manifesto itself makes a edgy inspiration board for the wall of the fashion mortal. The first thing we did was stick Natalia to our fridge, a fitting 'thinspiration' if ever there was one! Unfortunately, this tactic does not work if you make an unsuspecting boy visit the fridge on your behalf, and serve up a delicious toastie to your seat at the kitchen table...

The Manifesto will be distributed exclusively on Saturday, February 20 in the streets of Paris, London, Milan, Tokyo, Hong Kong and, for the first time Berlin, so if you fancy a huge tote and some inspiration, head out to collect one!

Interesting. Here is Anne Hathaway in the New Alice in Wonderland with bleached white tresses. I have never particularly wanted to go blonde, but there is something about pure platinum locks that really appeals. However, I am naturally dark brunette and possess a yellow skin undertone with brown eyes, a combination that bodes risky when dying your hair any colour. I squashed all blonde ambition with the notion that my complexion forbids tampering with nature, but in fact, Anne carries off this look and has a colouring very similar to my own. Pale skin, dark brows and lashings of red upon lip looks beautiful against the ethereal white waves. Interesting indeed...

RIP Alexander McQueen

A sad loss indeed. I am not only saddened by the event itself, but slightly sickened by the human reaction to it. On walking in Nottinghill, I watched the windows of the various vintage shops on the way to Portabello Road. There it was, a (beautiful) black dress, hoicked to the glassy shop front and stuffed on to a mannequin, proudly proclaiming in black marker pen 'Alexander McQueen £300'. No doubt this was a recent addition to the main display, and no doubt the price had been nicely embellished due to circumstance. To think of someone rifling through the shop rails to locate that dress and to purposeful capitalise on a tragic death really bothered me.

I do understand of course. It is really very strange how news like this can change ones entire perception of a physical object. On seeing McQueen rings and scarves recently, I simply admired and desired them, yet when I saw these same accessories after hearing the news, they took on a new melancholy and seemed almost haunting. The severed connection between creator and object may be imaginary on a physical level, but it can still be affecting. For this reason, his collections will always mean more now.

Pizza Express but Lighter

Yum. The above photo brings back excellent eating memories. Last week I attended a Pizza Express event to promote their new lighter food options. I often frequent Pizza Express armed with 2 for 1 vouchers, and I am so well learned in the restaurant locations that I navigate Soho streets using their round signs as beacons, so I was more than happy to go along after work and sample the goods.

We were greeted with the Crostini Al Pomodoro,

Ciabatta bread topped with santos tomatoes marinated in extra virgin olive oil, garlic and fresh oregano. Served on rocket leaves, shavings of grana padano and balsamic syrup.

Delicious! This lighter option doesn't feel like you are making any sacrifices with a crispy carby base and some nice cheesy toppings. Here is B enjoying a bite.

We then got the opportunity to make our own pizza! We rolled the dough and diligently cut out the centre to make the lighter Leggera pizza. This pizza promises to come in at under 500 calories, thanks to the addition of a salad center, lower fat mozzarella, and clever toping portion control. Though I am usually an all or nothing eater (literally) this is a very good idea to satisfy the pizza vs salad dithers.

Thanks to B for the picture of us both- I took one on my own camera but I had a very large arm in it! After the eating, we were brought the lighter desert, Sotto Zero.

Two scoops of delicious low fat natural frozen yoghurt topped with blackcurrants in syrup with a dark chocolate straw.

I really enjoyed this and would eat it again. It was not as creamy as real ice-cream but had more boot than an acidic sorbet. A fair trade if one is trying to be healthy.

All this was enjoyed with a glass of low calorie, low alcohol wine. Refreshing and fruity it is a very pleasant drink, however, I can't really see me choosing this over a bottle of rich velvety Merlot!

Seeing Skulls Part. 2

I have made no secret of my love of skulls. I, like Hamlet, enjoy the idea of the romanticism of holding a skull in my hand. Recently I have come across some products that are less earthy and rotten than Hamlets' skull of Yorik, but yet remain deliciously gothic. The above ring by Alexander McQueen is divine, I want that creepy grinning skull resting on my knuckles with his glowing pearl eyes. The bumble bee makes it even more dark in my opinion, the seemingly feminine insect reminds us of how flies flock to decay. Wonderful!

And then the below...a ebony wax skull candle from D.L & Co. I don't know how this has been made, but the size and shape seems very realistic, as though it was cast from the mold of a real skull. This would rest beautifully on the mantelpiece of my cave room, though I wouldn't dare to light it- at $90 it is to be admired not used.

ASOS Paints

I have never tried Ciate nail paint before but have admired the bottle and range of shades from afar. Their collaboration with ASOS produced a range of very striking colours, and when I attended the beauty press day awhile back, I was lucky enough to take a twin polish set home with me. Each set contains contrasting shades, and I opened mine to find Chloe (above), a pale creamy nude, and Victoria, a dark red.

Chloe

Chloe looks almost china white and chalky in the bottle, but paints out as a creamy beige with tan undertones. It was easy to apply and stayed put for 3 days + which is impressive for a serial nail-chipper such as myself, and even when it did begin to flake off, the pale colour makes it far less obvious than with darker shades. The colour is very subtle, but classic. It gives a sophisticated polished look which was nice for a change! Also worth noting that the formula is quite thick, so it gives a 3D professional finish that could easily be mistaken for a proper, paid for manicure.

Victoria

I will start by saying that I love this colour. I may even go as far as saying that it is the perfect shade of dark red, unlike Rouge Noir and its followers, this has no brown undertones and is simply a deep berry-like red with a pretty translucency to it. Two coats it appears raspberry, yet after three coats it becomes plum, which gives a good versatility. Unfortunately the formula itself is a little trying with the patience, it is quite gloopy to paint on, and chips easily, after a day I found my nails looking a shabby. Even so, the colour is enough to keep me going with it, and it has been on my nails perhaps 25% of every month (a good percentage for one who changes colour often). I am down to half a bottle and unless I find a similar colour, it will need to be replaced!

Return of the Boot!

Does anyone remember these lovelies? Way back at the beginning of last year these Emma Cook for Topshop boots sold out in an instance, a shortage that could not be combated by the most dedicated of topshop.com and ebay crawlers. I was one of the bereaved. I tried to buy next seasons cream/tan versions, heck I even considered the wedges in winter but nothing would quite compare to this beautiful black vision of boot-ness.

Though these are now in my bedroom and have caressed my feet, they are very regrettably not mine. On New Years Eve Ellie came bearing a large bag carrying the 'back up shoes' (everyone should employ this foot-saving technique). On peering in to the bag I was ecstatic!! Her back up was my favourite boots in the flesh! Her first choice of shoe held up, so as we clopped around East London, the Emma Cook boots remained in the flat. I could not resist trying them on!

Beautiful, I can't deny, but sadly quite uncomfortable. I had a topple walking the short length of my cave room, and I am quite a practiced heel walker. They are actually very, very high, a fact that deceives the eye in pictures. Even so, I would very much like to take them for a turn around town! Ellie did offer so perhaps I shall dare...
